Marathon Training w/ Limited Time & a Busy Schedule

12/4/2024

How I CRUSHED My Marathon

I'm turning 40 in two weeks and I recently CRUSHED my first marathon in 13 years.

I had BIG goals and my expectations were high and I felt like it was now or never.

It's also important to note that we have two young kids, travel a lot and our weekly work schedule is never the same.

Here's are my 5 takeaways from finishing the Philadelphia Marathon and going sub 3 hours for the first time (6:45/mi).

My 5 Takeaways From My Marathon

✅Worked with an experienced Coach

Even though I am an experienced athlete and coach myself, it was incredibly valuable to have someone else oversee my training program. Left to my own, I could very easily "over do it" and end up injured or simply not getting the maximum fitness gains.

Hiring a run coach is a no brainer if you are a beginner. And if you are an intermediate/advance athlete with specific goals, an experienced coach may be exactly what you need to achieve what you set out for.

✅100% flexible and dynamic schedule
(2 young kids, busy at work, travel, ect)

Even though I'm very planned and organized in life, things unexpectedly change ALL THE TIME! Having a flexible training schedule that can be changed when needed is invaluable.

✅Training < 30mi/week

This is on the very low side of mileage when training for a marathon. Running takes a toll on your body and I wanted to make sure my fragile, old man, self didn't get answered. Fortunately, as a triathlete, I am a competent swimmer and have a bike so I incorporated 1-2 swims and 1 bike workout each week to supplement my run training.

Fun fact: Even if you are a pure runner and have zero desire to do a triathlon, learning how to swim and incorporating it into run training is a secret weapon. I cannot tell you how many times marathoners have come to us for training and after learning how to swim, incorporated it into their marathon prep only to earn 10, 15, 20+ year PRs. NO JOKE!

✅Race plan (pacing, nutrition, ect) presented was PERFECT!

Having a race day plan and sticking to it is critical. Coach E gave me a perfect plan and all I had to do was execute. And I did. When you have a smart plan, there is no guess work on race day.

✅Next day - muscles were definitely fatigued, but I felt surprisingly good.

This was a pleasant surprise. Something I did not anticipate. When I race, I EMPTY THE TANK and leave it all out there. I expect NOT to feel so great in the hours and days immediately following the event. This time was a different story.
